Question :
Can oxo-biodegradable plastics be used as fuel?
Answer:
Unlike paper, cardboard and bio-based plastics, oxo-biodegradable plastics do not absorb water when in use or discarded. When they are incinerated with energy recovery, they produce as heat the carbon energy that stored in the polymer structure, which is identical to the fossil intermediates from which they were originally manufactured. In other words, the plastic is fully recovered as heat.
By contrast the carbon in bio-based materials contains much less energy, and because they readily absorb water, they are less valuable as fuel.
